Jadeveon Clowney and his long wait are finally over as the Tennessee Titans have landed the best available player in free agency.

It was an eventful night for Jadeveon Clowney as he has been rumored to be talking to the Tennessee Titans for a while. ESPN’s Dianna Russini first reported that Clowney had chosen the Titans over the New Orleans Saints.

The news took a quick turn as it may not have been the case just yet. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported shortly afterward Clowney told her he had not made a decision at that point.

About an hour later, Russini came back with another tweet stating sources said Clowney told Tennessee he was picking them. Those sources also said he had already reached out to Titans teammates telling them how excited he was to join the team.

Anderson confirmed after a late push from New Orleans, Clowney told them he will join Tennessee. Russini and Anderson both state that Clowney picked the Titans because of his familiarity with Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel. Clowney previously played under Vrabel when he was an assistant on the Houston Texans. Anderson went as far as to say Tennessee improved their offer to push past the Saints.

Clowney dominated through his first five seasons in the NFL with the Houston Texans. He recorded 29 sacks and made three Pro Bowls during that time. Houston made the surprising move trading Clowney to Seattle just before the season began last year. Clowney finished with just three sacks, but also had a career-high four forced fumbles and recorded an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

How Clowney Fits with Tennessee

Mike Vrabel was on the Houston Texans’ staff that helped develop Jadeveon Clowney. Going into his NFL career, Clowney had concerns with a lack of effort on certain plays. Vrabel was part of the staff that helped Clowney become a beast in the NFL.

Clowney is a defensive fit with Tennessee running a 3-4 defense. Where he comes in is he can rush the passer either as a defensive end or an outside linebacker. His speed and versatility make him dangerous against quarterbacks. He already knows Vrabel and his defense well enough so the transition should be easy for him.

Tennessee was needing a pass rusher of Clowney’s talent and adding him gives the Titans what they need to succeed. Many think this should put the team over the top to be Super Bowl contenders. Their defense seems to have all the pieces needed to win it all. It will all now fall on the offense to be consistent and balanced.

Titans fans should be excited for Clowney to join the team this season. This could be a big season for a team that needs to take a leap. 9-7 is no longer acceptable for Tennessee. It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Titans.
