Jamal Adams gets his wish as the Seattle Seahawks traded for the All-Pro safety.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the New York Jets traded Jamal Adams and a 2022 fourth-round pick to Seattle. The Jets received safety Bradley McDougald, two first-round picks in 2021 and 2022, and a 2021 third-round pick.

The move comes as the heels of Adams requesting a trade earlier in the summer. It has been an evolving story as New York did not want to give Adams a new contract. Adams has been outspoken about the organization and even called out head coach Adam Gase for not being the right leader for the team.
Since joining the NFL in 2017, Adams has been highly regarded as one of the best safeties in the league. He’s already been voted into two Pro Bowls and was a First-Team All-Pro last year. So far, he’s recorded 273 tackles, 12 sacks, and 25 pass deflections.
Adams’ current contract has him making $3.5 million as well as $9.86 million in 2021. The Jets did pick up his fifth-year option that kept him under contract through 2021.
How Jamal Adams Helps Seattle
Seattle gets a massive boost in their secondary. A pass defense that is in need of more talent to help them adds the best safety in the NFL. The Seahawks’ pass defense was ranked 27th in the league in pass yards. Their rush defense also ranked 22nd in rush yards allowed.
Adams can help the Seahawks in a multitude of ways. He’s got great ability to come off the outside and pressure the quarterback in blitzes. Certain packages can be used to take advantage of the skill set of Adams. Despite not being big on interceptions, Adams is solid on pass coverage and can create havoc for offenses.
Seattle gave up a lot of draft picks to secure Adams, but it’s well worth it to be the future of the defense. He’s just 24 years old and is already one of the best in his position. The Seahawks have been on a youth movement for their defense the past three years. Adams will provide a key piece to building the future of their defense.
Where do the New York Jets go From Here?
The Jets have been in rebuilding mode for quite some time and trading Adams to Seattle was never part of the plan. He was supposed to be the future of the franchise, but their mishandling of his contract hurt their growth plan.
Bradley McDougald is a solid safety who has helped Seattle’s defense for three seasons. The impact of McDougald won’t be the same as Adams, but still can be plugged in as a day one starter. He’s older and gives the Jets some more veteran leadership to a young team.
New York gets worse on paper, but added draft picks never hurts to have. They have two first-round picks the next two seasons that could be used for picks or trade options. The Jets can use those picks to get younger or find great talent by moving up in the draft. It’s the perfect way to continue their rebuilding mode.
They are still years away from winning, but maybe these draft picks they received could help out. New York needs to hope that Sam Darnold works out and becomes a star at quarterback.
