While Tom Thibodeau appears to be the top choice to coach the New York Knicks, don’t count Jason Kidd out.

Tom Thibodeau was the leading candidate for the New York Knicks job at one point and was in contract talks. Reports have that the negotiations have stalled out resulting in Jason Kidd emerging as the new leading candidate.

The New York Post has reported Kidd’s interview with the Knicks impressed the upper office. Kidd is wanting to coach the New York Knicks and is looking to earn the job. A source told the Post that Thibodeau has a 65% chance of landing the job despite contract issues.

Thibodeau has been a free agent this season after being fired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the middle of last season. He’s been a head coach for eight total seasons with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota. Six out of the eight seasons he has coached resulted in trips to the playoffs. Despite multiple seasons of playoff success, Thibodeau has never made the finals as a head coach.

After a successful career as a player, Kidd jumped right into head coaching for the Brooklyn Nets. He led the team to the playoffs in his lone season as he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in next season. Kidd spent four seasons with the Bucks leading them to the playoff twice. In his final season with the team in 2018, Milwaukee was 23-22 before Kidd was fired. He’s currently an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Should the Knicks Hire Thibodeau or Kidd?

If the Knicks can find a silver lining in their decision, both coaches have proven their skill set. Thibodeau and Kidd have both seen success in the regular season and taken their teams to the playoffs. Unfortunately, neither one has made the finals in their careers, but had built teams who could win it all.

The bad part is New York has hired coaches with winning success in the past with Larry Brown, Mike D’Antoni, and David Fizdale. No matter who has taken over the organization, the team can’t find ways to win. The team has had 13 different head coaches since 2000 leading to the franchise. That many changes never leads to success for a team.

New York has had plenty of time to pick out their next head coach and with COVID-19 impacting sports, it might have bought the Knicks more time. Typically, they would have had to hire someone by last month’s NBA Draft. This time, the team can properly evaluate the coaching job and pick the right person. They need to get it right this time.

Kidd has proven to be better at rebuilding teams, but Thibodeau has had more playoff success. The team needs to rebuild and win in the long term. New York will have to choose between rebuilding now with Kidd or long term success with Thibodeau.
