While some might question the hiring, the Knicks might have finally found their man in Tom Thibodeau.

The New York Knicks announced the hiring of Tom Thibodeau Thursday after the two sides were finalizing a five-year deal.

Thibodeau has coached two different in his career with the Chicago Bulls and the Minnesota Timberwolves. During his five seasons in Chicago, he led the team to the playoffs every season, but never making the finals. He lead the Timberwolves to the playoffs just once in his three seasons with the team. Thibodeau was out of coaching this season after putting together a 352-246 record in his career.

This season, the Knicks had David Fizdale entering just his second season with the team. After the team started 4-18, he was fired and Mike Miller took over as the interim coach for the rest of the season. The team finished this season at 21-45 and didn’t qualify for the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

What Tom Thibodeau Has With The Knicks

One way Knicks fan can look at it is, “Tom Thibodeau couldn’t do any worse.” This is a franchise that has seen continuous failures on and off the court. The team Carmelo Anthony for several years and could never do anything with him. They’ve tried to bring in talent that has never seemed to be enough. Now the team can’t bring in any superstars.

The good news for Thibodeau is the Knicks have some young talent to work with. RJ Barrett was top three on the team in points per game in his rookie campaign. Kevin Knox and Frank Ntilikina are both young former first-round picks who need to make a big leap next season. Julius Randle is arguably the best player on the team as he is their top scorer in the paint and rebounder. The team hopes to build around Randle and Barrett with additional star players.

There’s young talent for Thibodeau to work with, but the team in general needs to gel together. Too many of the players weren’t on the team the previous year so the chemistry wasn’t there. The team will need time to get there, but fans are tired of being patient of the team being in rebuilding mode. Thibodeau has coached young teams with the Bulls and Timberwolves in the past so this isn’t new for him.

It will be a process and Tom Thibodeau appears to be ready for the challenge with the Knicks. Can fans be patient during the rebuild?
