It’s been long awaited, but the Washington Redskins could be making a necessary change.
Many have been asking Washington owner Dan Snyder to consider changing their names. According to Adweek, letters signed by investment firms asked companies like Nike, FedEx, and PepsiCo to cut ties from the team.
FedEx did respond to the team name by stating, “We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name,” FedEx said in a statement Thursday night.
Nike also responded by pull Washington’s jerseys from their website. No comment was made by Nike as to why they pulled the jerseys.
Could Change be Coming for the Washington Redskins?
With Nike and FedEx’s responses, a statement was released from the team Friday morning stating that they are reviewing their name.
It’s the first time that the team has acknowledged that they would review their name. Back in 2013, Snyder told USA Today that, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.”
The move made by Washington doesn’t exactly mean change will happen, but with the threat of losing millions of dollars from Nike and FedEx, it’s a possibility.
New Names to Consider
Football fans have been speculating on new names Washington can go by in the future. One good name that has been brought up is the Washington Redtails.
The name would be of reference to the World War II Tuskgee Airmen, who became known as the first African-American military air fighters in U.S. history. The group picked the nickname “Redtails” due to the red color on the tails of their planes.
This would make a lot of sense and who celebrate a group of men that isn’t showcased in history as much as they should. The team would not have to change the colors as they could just redesign the logo. With the Black Lives Matter movement being a top social topic in the United States, it would be a step in the right direction.
Another name discussed was the Washington Warriors which could be an easier route for the team to take.
The team could use the same logo they used for their 70th anniversary. This would be a good way to show support for their franchise’s history while making the name change at the same time.
Other names have been brought up, but it is apparently that everyone agrees a change needs to be made. The team has several options to choose from. There is no more excuses for the franchise to ignore the issue and change the name.
