Fantasy Fridays

This week for Fantasy Friday we have a mess with Astro pitching with some new injuries and a few familiar faces returning..

We start by looking at the MASH unit of a rotation. Injuries are up league-wide this year as many predicted. The effects of the up and down and up again 2020 schedule do seem to be having an effect on the health of MLB pitching.

Lance McCullers Jr

Tuesday, Lance McCullers Jr was placed on the 10 day IL with shoulder soreness. While this could be anything, it is likely that Lance will miss more than the minimum as the team will take it easy with the health of the recently contract-extended starter. You really need to try to keep him on the roster for now. A sub 3.00 ERA and a 10.3 K/9 is not something you want to let slip. If you do not have him on your team, this may be an opportunity to buy.

Ralph Garza is being called up to fill McCuller’s spot on the roster. I wouldn’t bother picking him up unless something crazy happens.

Odorizzi and Valdez

The loss of Lance is bad for the Stros, but weatherable with the additions of Framber Valdez and Jake Odorizzi from the IL. If either is still available in your league better snag them quickly. Both are looking like they should be ready to roll.

Cristian Javier

With both players coming back from the IL it does mean that Cristian Javier will be going to the bullpen. What this means for Javiers fantasy standing is difficult to know at the moment. With the starters not going very deep into games, it is entirely possible that Javier gets multi-inning relief appearances and snags some wins. It’s also possible that baseball will be baseball and another pitcher is going to get hurt soon and Javier will be right back in as a back of the fantasy rotation starter.

Brian Abreu and Ryan Pressley

Brian Abreu got the call in the 9th in the second game against the Dodgers Wednesday. Apparently, Ryan Pressly’s neck is bothering him and keeping him on the shelf. If the neck continues to bother him I wouldn’t be surprised to see Abreu get some more shots at saves and see a temporary increase in his fantasy value.

Josh James

Josh James was recently transferred to the 60 day IL. If you are stashing him on your fantasy team it’s ok. This is purely a paperwork thing that does not affect his timetable.

There is constant movement in the Astros rotation and bullpen. Hopefully, you held onto your starters and will soon reap those rewards. If you have many Astros relievers…. remember, it is a long season and you can still climb back into this. No matter what, keep plugging away and join us next week for another Fantasy Friday.
